“I am wealthy with knowledge and friends and love.” – Donald Haylock
Don, 66, was born in Belize, or as Don fondly calls it, British Honduras, and had a happy childhood. Donald comes from a large family of twelve brothers and sisters. When he was young he loved to draw and could sketch anything. His mother was a good woman who taught him everything. Donald has three sons who are a blessing from God. His happiest moments come when God allows him to see something come to fruition. One of the things Donald is anticipating is the birth of his first great-grandchild. Don is grateful that the Lord allowed him to give good values to his children. He advises teens to remember that family is important and to be careful what society and the streets will tell you.

Important influence: God, family, friends
Grateful for: my talented & joyful students, life
I could relate to Donald’s passion for art and how he could draw at a young age. That is why I kept his portrait with hatching and sketch lines. I felt a warmth exuding from Donald and that is why I chose yellows and oranges in his portrait. God’s love and warmth seemed to be surrounding Donald and I wanted to capture that love of God. Donald has a peace about him and I like how he says that wealth is not just about material possessions, but wealth of friends and family. It has been an honor to paint Donald and be part of the Faces of Santa Ana along with Brian Peterson and my students. In my twenty years of teaching this has been one of the most rewarding projects. Brian Peterson and his passion to use his talents and abilities to share with others is truly inspirational and life-changing. I’m so proud of my students and how they have given their time, talent and hard work to help their community and care for others. It was a blessing and joy to paint Donald and I am very grateful for this experience.
